The book is divided into three main chapters which are about the story of license plates of the Vatican City State from the very first issue until the most recent including the description of the popemobile and the vehicles that formed part of the Vatican Garage. The last section is dedicated to the official documents of the Vatican State covering the registration of their vehicles. The very detailed text is rich in historical and technical notes and is illustrated with a great number of photographs that document each type of license plate and vehicle. Described in great detail are the license plates that have been used to identify cars used by various Pontiffs, easily recognisable by their red characters. Also carefully detailed are the plates with black characters that were and are assigned to all other vehicles with the exception of those for the personal use of the Pontiff. For the sake of precision, the book covers many pictures and designs illustrating the evolution of the license plates with reference to size, layout and colour of characters. Particular attention is given to historical context in which a single plate or a particular vehicle has been used. This publication follows a previous famous book by the authors that was dedicated to Italian license plates, titled Un secolo di targhe.
